Another celebrated architect is about to have his New York moment. But, this time, there is no billowing sail-like form, jagged crystalline spire or curvaceous squiggle.

Instead, the condominium now rising at 611 West 56th Street will eventually resemble a sensible composition of Perla Bianca limestone and glass that stands out for its simplicity — as well as a monolithic four-story-tall crown.

This is Pritzker Prize winning architect Alvaro Siza’s very first US building, which makes this ‘little’ condo quite a big deal. 611 West 56th Street is co-developed by Sumaida + Khurana and LENY - a team known individually for their dedication to contemporary architecture and design; and this project is no exception. Looking towards both Hudson Yards and the glittering skyline of Midtown Manhattan, this tower is slated to start releasing its sales from autumn 2019.

The latest addition to the New York City skyline is Pritzker Prize-winning architect Álvaro Siza’s new residential tower at 611 West 56th Street, a 37-story building capped by a 53-foot, limestone-encased bulkhead. The project—the Portuguese architect’s first in the United States—is entering the final stage of construction, with sales of its 80 units beginning this month.

Siza is celebrated for his sculptural designs, many of which are set within strikingly contrasting environments. Just take his Leça Swimming Pool in Porto, Portugal, which put him on the map in the 1960s, or his more recent design of Saya Park in South Korea: each structure gracefully rises out of its surroundings, distinguished by comparatively simple shapes. In the high risesaturated Big Apple, Siza brings about his signature minimalism and honesty.

As the 57th Street boom’s western bookend at 606 West 57th Street nears completion, another new tower around the corner is getting ready to break ground. Demolition has yet to begin on the site’s existing occupant, but Curbed featured the first full rendering for the project, which is being designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza. Dubbed 823 Eleventh Avenue, it will rise 35 floors and 440 feet to its rooftop, with 80 condominiums within. Sumaida+Khurana is the site’s developer, having acquired the existing building at 611 West 56th Street for $55 million last year, and completion is expected by 2019.
